New Castle Middle School Student Faces Felony Charges Following Assault on Classmate

A 12-year-old student from New Castle, Delaware, was arrested after assaulting a classmate at George Read Middle School. The incident, which occurred on February 5, 2024, involved the student attacking an 11-year-old peer with a box cutter brought from home. The victim received treatment for a facial injury at a local hospital.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Youth Aid Detectives were informed of the assault and initiated an investigation. The school, located at 314 East Basin Road, New Castle, removed the suspect from the classroom immediately after the incident.

Two days later, on February 7, the student turned herself in at Troop 2. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11, facing charges of Assault Second Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, and Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon.

After the arraignment, the student was released to a guardian on an $8,000 unsecured bond. This incident has prompted discussions about school safety and the control of weapon access to children.
