Prison time for union official from Mount Laurel

PHILADELPHIA — A Mount Laurel man is going to prison for his role in an embezzlement scheme at an electricians union.

Brian Burrows, 64, received a four-year term and was ordered to forfeit almost $136,000 at a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Philadelphia federal court.

He also must pay restitution — the amounts still to be determined — for his actions at Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia.

Burrow was the local’s president since 2008, serving as second in command for the politically powerful business manager John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty.

Burrows, Dougherty and several other union members were indicted in January 2019 on charges arising from the alleged theft and misuse of about $600,000 in union funds.

“Burrows stole from the hardworking electricians whose dues paid his salary, took deliberate steps to conceal it, and is now being held appropriately accountable,” U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero said in a statement after his sentencing.
