No injuries reported at building collapse in Wilmington’s Southbridge neighborhood

No injuries have been reported after an unoccupied building collapsed in Wilmington’s Southbridge neighborhood Monday morning.

The collapse at A and South Heald streets caused the evacuations of nearby homes and closed roads in Southbridge, including South Heald Street.

The southwest corner of A and South Heald streets is littered with bricks and other debris that seem to have peeled off the two-story structure. Bypassers could see into the first floor, while a view into the second floor was blocked by insulation.

Officials with the Wilmington Fire Department said a vehicle hit the building about 12:30 a.m., resulting in two minor injuries to the vehicle’s occupants.

“It is not known at this time if this collision is related to the collapse,” Wilmington Battalion Chief Robert F. Pryor said in a press release. “However, [Wilmington’s Department of License and Inspections] was on scene at the earlier incident and condemned the structure removing all occupants.  L&I was scheduled to return this morning to further assess the stability of the structure.”
