Wawa closes longtime store along Church Road in Mount Laurel. But a reopening is planned.

A longtime Wawa store has closed in Mount Laurel, but customers won’t be missing it for long.

The legacy store, which has stood for decades along Church Road, has been shut down for extensive remodeling, a Wawa spokesperson said. It’s expected to reopen in mid-November.

Wawa is not disclosing details of the makeover or its investment in the store, which is now gutted and fenced off.

When a reporter visited the site on Tuesday afternoon, workers in hard hats and heavy machinery were passing through a gaping doorway that previously welcomed coffee-drinkers and hoagie-eaters. A small front end loader rolled back and forth, carrying soil from inside the store to a dump truck in the parking lot.

First one under construction: Wawa to experiment with travel centers

Two construction workers carried long lengths of pipe into the building; another toted debris from the store and tossed it into a rapidly filling trash bin.

And while the project has reduced the building to little more than a shell, it might be seen as a sign of Wawa’s faith in the small store. In December of 2019, a SuperWawa opened about a mile away at the intersection of Foster Avenue and Route 73. This had prompted concerns among some customers that the smaller, older store could close for good.
