Sonic is famous for its old-school drive-in fare, over-the-top milkshakes and endlessly customizable drinks and slushes. (Personally, I’m an Ocean Water , popcorn chicken and grilled cheese stan.) Folks went absolutely bananas when a location opened near my hometown, and now I see why—Sonic placed unexpectedly high in my rankings of fast food fries and chicken sandwiches . When the chain restaurant launched its winter menu of unconventional sippers and one loaded handheld, I headed to the 2610 East Macdade Boulevard location in Holmes, Pennsylvania with high hopes and an appetite to find out which items were worth the hype. 4. Sparkling Sugar Cookie Dr Pepper
Taryn Pire
- What Is It: Dr. Pepper, caramel, sugar cookie syrup and sweet cream
- Price (small): $3.09
I get that this was a cross between a soda and a baked good, but it was suuuper sweet. With strong notes of caramel and butter at the front, all the crisp, cherry-vanilla complexities of Dr Pepper got lost in the cloying syrups. As a former Starbucks barista, I feel like this was like what you’d get if you let a teen behind the counter to pump the flavorings into their iced coffee . It wasn’t bad , but I wouldn’t order it again.
