Nguyen had been charged with criminal homicide for the 2022 shooting deaths of her two sons ages 9 and 13 in Upper Makefield, Bucks County. She was found incompetent subsequent to a mental health examination and a judge ordered her to be transferred to Norristown State Hospital in January 2023. She remained there until May 2023 before being incarcerated at SCI Muncy for two consecutive life sentences after pleading guilty last year to two counts of murder and related charges.

In November 2024 Nguyen’s husband discovered the payments during a civil action and learned the checks were cashed in Philadelphia. Investigators say the first two checks were dated during the time when Nguyen was “deemed incompetent” and being treated at the state hospital.
