Iconic department store closes forever in 72 hours leaving 7-floor colossus standing empty

The grand Macy’s store in Philadelphia city center will be closing its doors for the final time on Sunday as the department store loses another in-person shopping experience. In addition to the closure of the store , it was reported that the iconic Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, which is located within the retailer’s walls, will play hourly until closing time.

While Macy’s fate is sealed, it is currently unclear what will happen to the musical instrument. The organ has reportedly been an iconic feature in Philadelphia’s music scene for decades, having been played twice daily six days a week.

It has been stated that TF Cornerstone, which owns part of the Wanamaker Building and will reportedly be acquiring the rights to the full building, will keep the massive instrument . “TF Cornerstone recognizes the historical and cultural significance of the organ in the Wanamaker Building,” read a statement from the New York firm in January. “Our company has a long history in New York as a partner to Carnegie Hall and understands the way music resonates through a city. We are committed to the preservation of the organ and ensuring it remains a cherished part of the space.”…
