PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A time capsule is going into the new Holme Elementary School building, currently being built in Northeast Philadelphia. School leaders are hoping this one fares better than the last.
When school administrators opened the 1950s time capsule from the cornerstone of the old Holme building on Academy Road, they were disappointed. Principal Micah Winterstein said the items had deteriorated and nothing could be salvaged.
“We, during construction, had to break the stone apart to get into the time capsule, and most of its contents were disintegrated,” he said. “It was really hard to tell what it was or what previously was in there.”
The school is giving it another go. Winterstein joined district officials in a ceremony on Thursday to fill a stainless steel capsule. It will be installed in the new school, which is being built on the site of the old building. The school is expected to open in January 2026…
