We often hear parents refer to “The Talk”—the important conversation about how to interact with police when approached. This is one of those uncomfortable but necessary discussions that Black parents must have with their children. Interestingly, kids recognize the value of this conversation and understand its importance. In response, participants in YEAH Philly took it upon themselves to ensure that all children have access to this crucial information by developing engaging ways for them to learn.
On July 10, 2025, after a year of collaborative effort, YEAH Philly launched a youth-created “Know Your Rights” comic book. This initiative is paired with the organization’s ongoing training about rights associated with police interactions for various audiences, including schools, out-of-school time programs, and communities. This comic book is a first-of-its-kind resource that uses relevant and entertaining methods to educate young people—and individuals of all ages—about their rights during police encounters. An accompanying workbook is also in development and will be available for individual or bulk purchase.
The launch event took place at Ubuntu Fine Art Gallery, located at 5423 Germantown Avenue, where YEAH Philly youth creators, staff, and community leaders gathered to celebrate this unique educational tool. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as YEAH Philly participants met with the designer and legal support for the “Know Your Rights” comic book and signed copies that had been pre-ordered.
