In the early hours of Friday, August 29, police were called to investigate a cargo theft outside a Chick-fil-A in South Philadelphia, a crime that has added to a growing number of similar incidents across the city this year. The theft happened around 5:45 a.m. along the 2600 block of Penrose Avenue, when a Texas truck driver, waiting to make a delivery, was asleep inside his cab.
Investigators said two men and a woman forced their way into the truck’s trailer and stole a pallet of meat while the driver was inside. The driver later explained that he woke up to a rattling sound and realized his truck was being broken into. He described how the thieves had cut through steel to bypass the lock, which he believed required a machine or tool designed for such a job.
By the time he jumped from his cab and moved toward the truck, he saw three people in the act of stealing the cargo. The pallet taken contained 15 or 16 pieces of meat, though authorities have not yet determined the value of the stolen goods.
