Infant killed, mother critically injured in crash involving private ambulance

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — An infant is dead and the child’s mother is critically injured after a crash involving a private ambulance early Sunday morning in Northeast Philadelphia, according to police.

The collision happened around 5:15 a.m. at the intersection of Torresdale Avenue and Harbison Avenue.

Philadelphia police said a privately operated ambulance was traveling southbound on Torresdale Avenue at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light at the intersection. Investigators said the ambulance was not operating in emergency status and did not have lights or sirens activated at the time.

At the same moment, a 2010 Honda Accord traveling eastbound on Harbison Avenue with a green traffic signal entered the intersection. The ambulance then struck the driver’s side front door of the Honda, police said…
