In a neighborhood more used to the thump of basketballs than the crack of gunfire, bullets tore through a home behind the McKinley Firehouse in Elkins Park on Sunday night, rattling residents who woke to the sound of rapid shots and later found fresh damage on a nearby house. By morning, neighbors could see what the noise had left behind: holes in siding, marks in the yard and a shaken block that quickly drew a police canvass, as per FOX 29.
According to FOX 29, officers believe numerous shots were fired near the basketball court and are now asking residents to pull doorbell and security-camera footage for anything that might show the shooters or their getaway. Video in the station’s report shows officers scouring the area for shell casings and knocking on doors to find potential witnesses.
Where It Happened
The court sits directly behind the McKinley Fire Company at 893 Jenkintown Road in Elkins Park, according to the fire company’s website. That tight squeeze between the public court and nearby houses means stray rounds can easily reach backyards and exterior walls whenever someone decides to pull a trigger near the hoops.
Police Response and How to Help
Residents who saw anything or captured video around the time of the gunfire are being urged to contact Cheltenham Township Police. The township’s online pages list the department’s phone numbers along with a “Report a Concern” portal where people can send tips and upload potential evidence.
As outlined by Cheltenham Township, neighbors can also sign up for e-notifications to receive updates on this case and other public safety issues as the investigation moves forward…
