Ardmore shopping center evacuated as crews battle underground fire

LOWER MERION – On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 10:51 p.m., an underground fire broke out at a shopping center on East Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, leading to evacuations due to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

According to officials, crews from the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore were called to the rear of apartments at 170 Lakeside Road for what was described as an unknown type of fire.

Arriving crews began working on battling an underground fire near the alley at the Wynnewood Square Shopping Center at 270 Lancaster Avenue. The stores were evaluated and checked for smoke. Carbon monoxide was found at high levels in some stores…
