Walmart is streamlining its new drone delivery service, significantly reducing its testing locations. After initially rolling out the service in several states, the retail giant has decided to concentrate its efforts on just one area, leaving customers in Arizona, Utah, and Florida without the service.
Since partnering with DroneUp in 2022, Walmart has been experimenting with drone deliveries to enhance its logistics and customer service. However, the company has now decided to close 18 of its drone delivery hubs located in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Tampa. This decision follows an assessment of the service’s performance, which indicated that the operations in these areas were not sustainable at their current scale.
Tom Walker, CEO of DroneUp, explained that while the pilot programs provided valuable insights into consumer demand and operational challenges, the services in these locations were deemed “too small to be sustainable.” Walker emphasized that the company is now focusing on developing a scalable and profitable model, which includes improving automation and utilizing drones with higher payload capacities and longer ranges.
