Phoenix loses a familiar face, and way too soon

Morning. In today’s opinions newsletter : The familiar face we lost, plus a Pinal County election lawsuit and shots fired (twice) into a local campaign office.

It’s impossible to look for pictures of Richard de Uriarte in our photo archive and not smile.

The legendary Arizona Republic editorial writer was always smiling. Always up for something silly. Always so kind, and genuinely so.

You probably know someone like that, and if you don’t, you probably think this world needs more people like that. All vim and vigor. All good person, even on his worst days.

That was Richard.

He left our opinions staff many years ago, but no one ever really leaves the opinions family. And so, with heavy hearts, we share memories of our good friend and mentor to many, who passed away on Monday.

We’ll miss him.
