Search leads to arrest in Phoenix double shooting

A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder and burglary in a double shooting that ended in the death of a man and hospitalization of a woman, police said.

Refugio Jimenez, 49, was arrested in connection with the slaying of Rashaad Johnson, 29, who was killed in the shooting that occurred at about 12:50 a.m. Oct. 14 near 1300 West Sunland Avenue, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.

A 32-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicated an argument outside an apartment escalated into the shooting.

During his apprehension, police said Jimenez discarded a firearm and was wearing body armor. He also had methamphetamine, according to the release.

He was interviewed at police headquarters and “provided a self-defense claim that was not supported by the scene evidence,” the release stated.

He was booked into Maricopa County Jail on nine felony charges, including first degree murder/felony murder, burglary in the first degree, two counts of misconduct involving weapons/prohibited possessor, two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, misconduct involving body armor, felony trespassing and possession of a dangerous drug.
