Volunteers unite for Salt River cleanup, removing 6 tons of waste

PHOENIX — Over time, the Salt River has seen its fair share of illegal dumping, and although it may be impossible to clean it fully, that didn’t stop volunteers from trying to clean a section of the 200-mile-long river.

The Rio Reimagined, the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality coordinated the cleanup effort, which saw about 100 volunteers pick up about six tons of waste from the Salt River at the Tres Rios Wetlands near 91st Avenue and Broadway Road, in just a couple of hours on Saturday.
