PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The weight of a heavy heart brought the mother of Rafael Montoya to her knees by his memorial outside the DWNTWN nightclub on Central Avenue in Phoenix Thursday night. “I know everything changed already. I’m not the same person,” said Montoya’s mother, Mayra Barra. More than 100 people held a vigil for Montoya.
At just 22 years old, Montoya’s family said he was taken off life support Wednesday after getting severe brain damage following a fight Phoenix police said broke out outside the nightclub late Saturday night. ”I know he never hurt anyone, and he just wanted to have fun that night,” said Barra.
