The Phoenix Police Department shoots a lot of people, especially compared to other similarly sized departments. But one surefire way to catch a bullet, in Phoenix or anywhere else, is to pick a fight with a cop.
That’s what 46-year-old Sam Perone did, according to body-worn camera footage released by the department on Friday. After being pulled over in a traffic stop in north Phoenix on May 25, Perone yelled aggressively at a Phoenix police officer before squaring up and attacking him. After a tussle, Perone wound up with a bullet in one of his legs and was arrested and criminally charged.
Friday, the Phoenix Police Department released a “critical incident briefing” about the shooting.
