Phoenix-area first responders urge everyone to be heat smart

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — This weekend, the Phoenix area is expected to get its first 110-degree day of the year. With Father’s Day festivities on the horizon and protests scheduled throughout the Valley, first responders are gearing up to handle heat-related emergencies. They want people to be heat smart and take it easy.

First responders have already seen contact burns, heat exhaustion and mountain rescues this year, which can put their crews in danger and dry up resources. Scottsdale Fire Capt. David Folio said now is the time to prepare.

“Know your limitations. You become a victim of heat exhaustion really quick,” Folio said. 110 degrees is not something to mess around with and Folio said some people don’t take the heat seriously. “They’re just not being responsible. And then they’re putting a lot of lives at stake by sending the rescuers out on the trail to save them,” he said…
