Documents detail how paralegal allegedly smuggled drugs into Phoenix jail

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — New court paperwork breaks down how a Valley paralegal allegedly smuggled drugs into the 4th Avenue Jail in Phoenix before his arrest last week.

On Aug. 14, investigators say 45-year-old Christopher Byers visited the jail for a legal meeting with an inmate and to exchange paperwork. He reportedly left the paperwork with MCSO staff before walking back to his residence, which was about a mile away.

Detectives say he dropped off 200 to 300 sheets of paperwork in an unsealed bag. While reviewing the papers, they noticed that multiple sheets were discolored, a common sign that they had been soaked in a substance. Three sheets from the stack tested positive for synthetic cannabis, more commonly known as “Spice” or “K2.”…
