Students demand removal of SROs, weapon detection systems at Phoenix Union campuses following student’s death on campus

PHOENIX — The first governing board meeting for a Phoenix school district since one of its own students was killed on campus was packed Thursday night with many demanding change.

Last month, 16-year-old Michael Montoya was stabbed and killed by a fellow student during class at Maryvale High School, according to Phoenix police. Investigators and the Phoenix Union High School District are looking into how the suspect got a pocket knife onto campus even though there are weapon detection systems that every student has to got through.
