Phoenix to pay family $5.25M after police car hits toddler

The family of a child who was severely injured after being struck by a Phoenix police vehicle in 2023 will receive a $5 million settlement from the city.

Phoenix leaders voted unanimously on Oct. 29 to settle the civil case that Arlene Garcia Rosales filed against the city and Officer Samantha Sewell.

Rosales accused Sewell of negligence, alleging that the officer sped through a south Phoenix neighborhood near 11th Avenue and Pima Street and hit the then-2-year-old boy, who suffered from “catastrophic injuries” on June 7, 2023…
