The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) has confirmed a measles case in a visitor from outside the county. This person may have exposed others at two public locations in Phoenix, Arizona. The exposures happened earlier this month at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Phoenix Downtown and at a concert at the Mortgage Matchup Center. Health officials are working with city and state partners and the venues to notify the public and limit further spread.
Dr. Nick Staab, chief medical officer at MCDPH, said measles is very contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours. About 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus will become infected. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended for children and for adults born after 1957 who have not been vaccinated.
The exposures occurred at Home2 Suites by Hilton Phoenix Downtown (125 E Jackson St) from November 5 at 3:00 pm to November 6 at 1:00 pm, and at the Mortgage Matchup Center (201 E Jefferson St) during a concert from November 5 at 6:00 pm to November 6 at 12:30 am.
