Arizona mother says changes to inmate mail take away emotional connection

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Department of Corrections will stop delivering physical letters from family and friends to inmates starting Dec. 15. It’s a change that some family members say will strip away an important personal connection.

Veronica Baca, who served nearly seven years in prison and whose 29-year-old son is currently incarcerated, says that the handwritten letters she sends weekly “are very important.”

“To me, it’s holding a hand of a family member. Their hand was on that paper and the love that they put into it, and the thought and the time, the money they paid for the parcel,” Baca said. “I felt like they’re cutting off the line of communication between my son and I.”…
