South Phoenix New Year’s morning stabbing leaves man dead

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an early New Year’s morning stabbing that left one man dead in south Phoenix according to a press release.

Officers responded to the area of 12th Place and Southern Avenue about 1:58 a.m. regarding someone being stabbed. According to the report, when officers arrived on the scene, they located an adult male, later identified as 34-year-old Gilbert Ray Ayonayon II, suffering from at least one stab wound. The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported Gilbert to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers identified several witnesses at the scene who identified 19-year-old Frank Joseph Martinez as the man involved in the incident. A short time later, Martinez returned to the scene and was taken into custody…
