Mesa, Arizona – Authorities have identified the three people who lost their lives in a fiery wrong-way crash on an East Valley freeway late last month, confirming that a wrong-way driver was among the victims.
Crash Happened in Early Morning Hours
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on December 27 along the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near McDowell Road.
Investigators say a 2019 Kia Sorento was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, creating a dangerous wrong-way situation on the freeway during overnight hours when visibility and traffic awareness are already reduced.
Wrong-Way Driver Identified
Troopers identified the wrong-way driver as Matthew Viramontes, 25 years old. Authorities confirmed that Viramontes’ vehicle collided head-on with another car moments later, leaving no opportunity for evasive action.
Victims in Second Vehicle Named
The Kia Sorento crashed into a 2003 Toyota Corolla Matrix, causing both vehicles to burst into flames following the impact.
Officials identified the victims in the second vehicle as:
- Isaac Reed, 18, driver
- Adrian Fajardo, 18, passenger
Both teens were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash and resulting fire.
