Phoenix cops given more discretion for citing pedestrians standing on traffic medians

PHOENIX — Phoenix police officers may now first issue citations rather than warnings when they observe pedestrians standing on traffic medians.

Starting Jan. 16, the city’s code will be amended to remove a requirement that had forced officers to first issue a warning to pedestrians who violate the traffic rule. But now officers will have the discretion to first issue a civil citation.

City officials claim the intent of the rule change is to “promote safer use of public roadways.”…
