Several popular hiking trails to close as extreme heat hits Phoenix area

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Multiple Phoenix-area hiking trails will be restricted later this week as the Valley grapples with extreme heat.

The City of Phoenix announced that for safety reasons, some trails will be restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from March 19-22. The trails include:

  • Camelback Mountain: Echo Canyon and Cholla Trail
  • Phoenix Mountains Preserve: Piestewa Peak Summit Trail and associated trails
  • South Mountain Park and Preserve: Holbert Trail, Mormon Trail, Hau’Pal Loop Trail, and access to the National Trail from the Pima Canyon Trailhead

During extreme heat warnings, hiking is strongly discouraged on all Phoenix trails, officials say.

Tuesday through Sunday are all First Alert Weather Days for a historic heat wave in the Phoenix area. The Valley will see its first triple-digit day of the year this week, the earliest ever recorded. Highs are expected to climb to 105-106 on Thursday through Saturday, and Sunday is expected to peak at 103, marking daily records for each day…
