Man indicted for attempted murder after shooting involving DEA agents in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — One of the men allegedly involved in the shootout with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents in Phoenix earlier this year has been indicted for attempted murder, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Eduardo Valenzuela Lopez, 33, of Sonora, Mexico, who investigators said was in the U.S. illegally, has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of:

  • Attempted murder of a federal officer
  • Assaulting a law enforcement officer
  • Possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking
  • Possession of a firearm by a person unlawfully present in the United States
  • Conspiracy to distribute fentanyl
  • Two counts of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl

His co-defendant, Jael Gonzalez Banuelos, 22, of Phoenix, was also indicted by a grand jury on drug-related charges. They both appeared before a federal judge Wednesday and were arraigned.
