Downtown Pittsburgh comes alive for Juneteenth celebration

Downtown streets are filling with music, food and history as the Western Pennsylvania Juneteenth Celebration anchors one of the region’s biggest tributes to Black freedom between Point State Park and Market Square this weekend, part of a growing slate of events highlighted in USA TODAY’s guide to Juneteenth in Pittsburgh.

Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black Texans finally learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, a story explored in USA TODAY’s national Juneteenth coverage and by the National Park Service.
