The Cathedral of Learning has long been one of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable landmarks, and for generations, it has also served as a symbol of the city’s rich sports tradition.

“You had not only the greatest Pittsburgh athletes, but some of the greatest athletes in the world who played (at Forbes Field),” Pitt sports history professor Rob Ruck said. “A city where people worked hard and played harder, were lost but persevered, and in the end, became among the best in the world that they did, and the Cathedral of Learning loomed over that.”
