Time is ticking down to spring training and guys are starting to get snatched up a bit more rapidly. In Pittsburgh they tacked on to their pitching roster. The Pirates sign closer Aroldis Chapman to an one year deal as long as the physical goes well.
MLB insider for FanSided, Robert Murray; breaks the story on Chapman, “the Cuban Flame Thrower.” He briefly reveals,
“Free-agent reliever Aroldis Chapman in agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal.”
Moreover, baseball and sports writer, Francys Romero confirms Murray’s intel and adds info on the financials. Romero says,
“Breaking: Cuban LHP Aroldis Chapman is on agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates, per sources. A massive contract for Aroldis Chapman and his agency Wasserman. $10.5 M for a 2024 season shortly after his 36th birthday, only talks about Chapman’s legacy in MLB.”
Lastly, USA Today Major League Baseball columnist, Bob Nightengale chimes in as well. Bob says,
“Pirates owner Bob Nutting promised that his team would be competitive this year, and the Pirates sign closer Aroldis Chapman to a one-year, $10.5 million deal. [By the way] Robert Murray on it.
All-Star closer David Bednar and Aroldis Chapman will be powerful 1-2 punch for the Pirates bullpen.
Chapman, 36 next month, went 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 15.9 K/9 rate with KC and TEX in 2023. He won his second WS ring.”
