Allegheny River chosen as Pennsylvania’s 2024 River of the Year: DCNR

(WJET/WFXP/ YourErie.com ) — The results are in! A western Pennsylvania river has been named the 2024 River of the Year, according to a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) release.

The Allegheny River was chosen by the public as this year’s winner. The 325-mile river begins in Potter County, crossing briefly into New York and then through six counties in Western Pennsylvania before ending in Pittsburgh where it meets the Monongahela River and flows into the Ohio River.

“We are excited to honor the Allegheny River as Pennsylvania’s 2024 River of the Year, and I cannot wait to celebrate this incredible river during a sojourn later this year,” Dunn said.

The public was invited to vote online for the River of the Year, choosing from among three waterways nominated.

In total, 20,259 votes were cast with the Allegheny River receiving 8,307; the Youghiogheny with 7,212; and the Lackawaxen River with 4,740.
