Penguins Keep Record Alive With Oilers Loss

PITTSBURGH – The Edmonton Oilers put up a great stretch of wins, but they came out of the All-Star break with a loss, falling just shy of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ all-time streak. The Oilers lost for the first time in 16 games, ending their streak just one shy of the Penguins mark from 1992-93 when they put up 17 straight victories.

It was a close effort, but the Oilers eventually lost to the Vegas Golden Knights by a score of 3-1. Despite the loss, the Oilers used their 16 consecutive wins to propel themselves into a good playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

Now, with a 29-16-1 record and 59 standings points, the Oilers are in pretty good shape in a relatively weak conference.

When the Penguins put up their 17 straight wins, they did so to cap off the 1992-93 season and seal the franchise’s only President’s Trophy for the best record in the NHL. Looking for a three-peat of Stanley Cups, the Penguins finished with a 56-21-7 record for 119 standings points.

That team went on to lose in the second round of the postseason to the New York Islanders, but still hold the franchise record for most wins and points in a single season. And obviously, thanks to the Oilers’ loss, their record of 17 consecutive wins will hold strong as the NHL’s all-time best.
