Steelers opt to bite the bullet in an effort to correct previous mistakes

Things change fast in the NFL when it comes to roster evaluation.

Perhaps the most difficult part of the offseason is projecting future production based on a proven track record.

The good part about it? It could lead to the signing of a valued free agent:

Cutting Their Losses

The decision to release all three of these players was an easy one when you consider that both Trubisky and Okorafor were due March roster bonuses and Harvin had struggled in his two seasons as punter.

Now both of these players come with dead cap hits that total nearly $8 million, but their releases free up over 10 million dollars, helping Pittsburgh not only get under the cap, but placing them one step closer to making a big free-agent acquisition.

And Monday’s moves aren’t the end, they are the beginning. Pittsburgh will also have decisions to make on Patrick Peterson, Larry Ogunjobi and Mason Cole, all of whom are also due a March roster bonus, not to mention players like Allen Robinson who will allocate $10 million in savings alone via his release .

So buckle up Steelers fans, Monday was merely an offseason appetizer, with free agency as the main course in a little over a month.
