Pittsburgh brewery makes nation’s best autumn beer; Western PA site among best corn mazes

A Mercer County attraction has one of the 10 best corn mazes and pumpkin patches in the country. And a Pittsburgh brewery makes the nation’s best fall seasonal beer. So say the voters in a special autumn edition of USAToday’s 10 Best, announced Wednesday.

The Big Hop Harvest Ale from East End Brewing is the nation’s tastiest fall beer, beating out acclaimed brewing companies like Southern Tier, Great Lakes and Allagash, voters said.

Irons Mill Farmstead in New Wilmington has the sixth-best pumpkin patch in the U.S., and the 10th-best corn maze, according to the survey.

Irons Mills’ 2024 corn maze is patterned in honor of Pittsburgh Dad, the regionally popular video series depicting a typical Western Pennsylvania, or Yinzer, father. Pittsburgh Dad, played by Hempfield High graduate Curt Wootton, announced his satirical political candidacy in conjunction with the maze.

“Now I sat here and (done) some thinking, what is the most important thing a candidate can do while running for president,” Pittsburgh Dad said in the maze reveal video. “You guessed it. Get my face carved into a corn maze and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Get my face carved into the corn maze of the Irons Mill Farmstead.”
