There has been a shocking rise in tow truck scams. But one operator in Pittsburgh is facing time behind bars after holding cars hostage and committing insurance fraud. He owes insurance companies $400,000 after targeting 36 drivers.

About 36 drivers can relax knowing that justice is being served after a tow truck operator held their cars hostage. The suspect, identified as Vince Fannick, charged victims between $9,000 – $11,000 to tow their vehicles short distances.

He refused to give the vehicle back until he was paid. There are no legal limits on how much operators can charge for towing services. Many often get away with predatory practices and scams.

But in this case, the judge decided to send a message. Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority warns operators to take notice…
