Overnight Traffic Stoppages on Route 28 Ramps for Wrong-Way Detection Testing Next Week

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will conduct overnight intermittent traffic stoppages on several Route 28 ramps in Allegheny County. The stoppages are scheduled from Tuesday, December 9, through Thursday, December 11, 2025, weather permitting. Each stoppage will last 15 minutes or less and will occur between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Crews will be testing a wrong-way detection system during these times.

The affected ramps include the northbound off-ramps to Highland Park Bridge/Aspinwall (Exit 6) and Millvale (Exit 3B), the southbound off-ramp to 31st Street Bridge/Strip District (Exit 2), and the northbound left-hand off-ramp to I-279 North/East Ohio Street. The $4.8 million safety project covers the area from the City of Pittsburgh to Harmar Township. The project includes installing sensors, detectors, and cameras to identify wrong-way drivers.
