An Ohio man says a Jason Aldean concert at the Pavilion at Star Lake went from big night out to nightmare when a full can of beer smashed into his head, and he is now suing Live Nation and other venue operators. The lawsuit, filed this week by national plaintiffs’ firm Morgan & Morgan, claims the August incident left Michael Mollenkopf with a severe concussion and a lasting stutter. Mollenkopf is asking a court to hold the venue and its partners responsible for what his attorneys describe as preventable security failures.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, the complaint alleges Mollenkopf was hit in the head with a full, open can of beer, knocked unconscious, and later diagnosed with a severe concussion. The filing says he needed hospital treatment and has since developed speech and cognitive issues, including a new stutter. Morgan & Morgan attorneys submitted the lawsuit on his behalf.
WPXI reports that the incident happened on Aug. 9 during Aldean’s stop at the outdoor amphitheater and that the complaint names seven defendants, including Live Nation, the Pavilion at Star Lake, Crossroads Properties and Legends Hospitality. The suit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages and calls for a jury trial on a single negligence claim. Mollenkopf’s legal team argues the venue “should have known” about safety risks tied to large, alcohol-fueled crowds and should have taken basic steps to keep things under control.
What the suit alleges
The complaint accuses venue owners and event organizers of negligence, recklessness, and carelessness, and cites a widely circulated video from that night that lawyers say shows a man attacking a woman in the parking lot, according to CBS Pittsburgh. “What was supposed to be a memorable night out with his daughter ended with a life-altering traumatic injury,” Morgan & Morgan founders John Morgan and Mark Malone said in a prepared statement quoted by the outlet. The firm contends the defendants failed to provide adequate security and emergency response for concertgoers.
Venue safety and past incidents
Star Lake has had more than a few rough nights in recent years. WTAE documented a 2022 incident in which a Pittsburgh officer was accused of punching a woman at a concert, and local outlets have reported other post-show fights on the property. Channel 11’s earlier coverage also highlighted a disturbing on-site video from the August Aldean show that captured a separate assault in the parking lot, and investigators told WPXI at the time that they were looking into both incidents.
