‘It was a wakeup call’: Students reevaluate Pitt Patty’s traditions one year after roof collapse

As “Pitt Patty’s” weekend approaches one year after a roof collapsed during South Oakland celebrations, the Pitt community is considering how to balance St. Patrick’s Day traditions with caution.

On March 14, 2025, a roof with at least 20 partygoers collapsed in the backyard of a Semple Street lot, hospitalizing 16 people. A year later, some Pitt students are feeling particularly cautious about their upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
