Tesla Battery Blaze Draws Big Response to Shadyside Giant Eagle Garage

Late Friday, a Tesla that was plugged in and charging in the private parking garage at the Giant Eagle Market District on Centre Avenue in Shadyside had its battery ignite, bringing a large first-responder presence to the store. Fire crews quickly knocked down the flames, and officials said no one was hurt. The supermarket building and nearby cars were not damaged.

According to WTAE, Public Safety spokesperson Emily Bourne said the Tesla was plugged in in the private garage when its battery caught fire and that firefighters “quickly put out the fire.” The station also reported a large presence of firefighters and other emergency personnel outside the Market District on Centre Avenue.

According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, responders are advised to prioritize exposure protection and cooling rather than attempting to fight a battery fire with a small extinguisher.

MapQuest shows the store address, while charging listings indicate chargers on site. If you see smoke or sparking while charging, step well away from the vehicle and call 911, since trained crews have the gear and guidance to manage battery incidents safely…
