FRISCO — The ongoing “will they or won’t they” saga with the Dallas Cowboys came to a definitive end Monday, closing the books on what had become the most talked about coaching situation across the league. Mike McCarthy will not return as head coach next season and the Cowboys will begin their search for a new leader.

This became an ugly process, drawn out too far where McCarthy had sustained a slight disadvantage to other candidates while the Cowboys have now put themselves in a bind, having limited access to the better candidates in this cycle.

It is a disappointing end to the McCarthy tenure that saw three consecutive 12-5 seasons and an abundance of success in seasons where Dak Prescott was not injured. Nonetheless, the change is no surprise after the ugly year since Dallas’ surprise loss in the 2023 NFC Wild Card.
