Family of 9-year-old killed in Dallas crash wants answers after police say ‘no offense occurred’

DALLAS, Texas — A roadside memorial still sits at San Paula Avenue and Matterhorn Drive in East Dallas, marking where 9-year-old Maxamus Hutchins was hit by a truck while riding his scooter in March 2024.

His mother, Jamie Abercrombie, said she tries to avoid the intersection as much as she can. It’s the street she grew up on and where her mother still lives. She and Maxamus lived in Wylie, and the pair were visiting when the crash occurred.

“It’s hard for me to go down there,” Abercrombie said. “This is a street that I grew up on, and then my son passed away on. It’s just crazy. It’s hard to come over here.”

According to Abercrombie, the driver initially left the scene and only returned as her son was being placed in an ambulance, admitting he was responsible—one of her last acts as his mother was performing CPR on the little boy…
