‘HOME IS A JOURNEY’ March sheds light on homelessness

Dozens of SMU’s students and faculty gathered in Doak Walker Plaza on Nov. 7 to participate in the HOME IS A JOURNEY March— a special gathering to bring awareness to those without homes. The event is created and hosted by Dr. Willie Baronet, an advertising professor on campus.

Baronet shared his journey of inspiration behind the march. 32 years ago, he continuously bought the signs held by homeless people he came across and created exhibits with the items. Seven years ago, he had the idea to march across campus while holding the signs to show solidarity. It has grown to become an annual event since.

“The main purpose of this walk is to bring dignity and respect to people who are often marginalized,” Baronet said. “We’re obviously on one of the most privileged campuses in the country and I think it’s powerful to use these events to learn a little more about the struggles of others.”…
