When Broward County Public Schools slammed the door on cellphone use for students last year, it was hugely controversial. A bell-to-bell ban, no cellphones allowed, even at lunch. Now the school board is on the verge of relaxing the policy.
All of the board members agree that cellphones do not belong in the classroom, but at Tuesday’s board meeting, it became clear that a slim majority want high school kids to be able to use their phones during their lunch periods.
“Freedom with structure works better than constant policing,” said Jea’Cier Leon, a senior at South Broward High School and one of the board’s student advisors.
