Plantation Eye Surgeon Achieves 100th Advanced Cataract Surgery Milestone at Bascom Palmer

Dr. Kendall E. Donaldson, an ophthalmologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Plantation, Florida, has performed her 100th cataract surgery using the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) technology. Dr. Donaldson holds the Rodgers Clark Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and is a professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She was recognized at a luncheon sponsored by RxSight, the company that developed the LAL technology. This event marked the use of advanced cataract surgery techniques at Bascom Palmer.

The Light Adjustable Lens is approved by the FDA for use in cataract surgery. Dr. Donaldson stated that Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has used this technology for about two years, following more than 25 years of research. The LAL allows for adjustments to the lens prescription after surgery, which can help customize vision correction. This is useful for patients with complex eye histories, such as those who have had PRK, LASIK, or RK, where choosing the correct lens power can be difficult.

Dr. Donaldson said the LAL technology allows surgeons to adjust a patient’s vision after the initial procedure. Surgeries are usually performed on each eye about a week apart. The first light adjustment is done three weeks after the second surgery. Patients can then provide feedback on their vision, and up to three light treatments can be used to further adjust the outcome. This process can improve distance, intermediate, and near vision, and may reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses…
