New drought monitor shows marginal improvement inland

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor, released Thursday, shows modest improvements in drought conditions across parts of South Florida after widespread rainfall during the data collection period.

Areas surrounding Lake Okeechobee saw some of the most notable improvement, with drought conditions easing from extreme drought, or D3, to severe drought, or D2, following repeated rounds of heavy rain.

In Martin County, the severe and moderate drought areas shrank after more than 4 inches of rain fell during the latest monitoring period, which ran through Tuesday. Portions of Palm Beach County and inland Southwest Florida also experienced minor drought improvements.

Elsewhere, drought conditions remained largely unchanged. Miami-Dade and Broward counties saw little change from last week’s map despite an active summer rainfall pattern, while much of the Florida Panhandle also remained steady…
