MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Health officials have issued a blue-green algae health alert for an area of Lake Okeechobee after water samples detected harmful toxins.
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County said the alert covers the Lake Okeechobee NES135 area and was issued in response to samples collected Sept. 15. The area is located on the north shore of the lake at J&S Fish Camp in Martin County.
Residents and visitors should use caution in and around the lake, officials said. People should not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft or otherwise come into contact with water where a visible algae bloom is present…
