St. Lucie County’s Public Safety Department, Martin County’s Emergency Management Agency, and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) plan to test the outdoor warning sirens for the St. Lucie nuclear power plant. The test is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 13, between 9 and 11 a.m. This is part of a bi-annual nuclear power plant exercise involving state and federal agencies.

The test will sound all 91 sirens within the 10-mile St. Lucie plant emergency planning zone for one minute. A message will be broadcast on the sirens’ public-address system before and after the test, to inform the public and ensure the system’s functionality.

FPL, St. Lucie and Martin counties regularly test the siren system. The goal is to ensure that, in case of an emergency at the St. Lucie plant, the sirens would be able to sound for at least five minutes.

In a real emergency, official instructions would be broadcast on local radio and television. This is part of the comprehensive emergency plan for the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant.
